Supporting teachers and their development
At London Zoo, our award-winning Community and Learning Team offers development opportunities for teachers as well as students. Our workshops can support schools to meet the government’s Sustainability and Climate Change Education strategy, help integrate nature-based learning into your curricula, and we can tailor each workshop to suit your requirements – please contact us for more information.
We can support teacher training providers with workshops on teaching outside of the classroom and sustainability, which can either be onsite at London Zoo, Whipsnade Zoo or online.
We also offer workshops and bespoke INSET day events on teaching outside of the classroom, sustainability and biodiversity in your setting, which can either be run onsite at London Zoo, Whipsnade Zoo, at your local school, or online.
Our new online teacher training, Transforming Teaching with Nature, can also be taken here: Transforming Teaching with Nature: Indoors and Out – Online Course – FutureLearn.
We do also work specifically with tutors at Further Education colleges teaching animal management and science, where we offer zookeeper insight days or practical, themed workshops aiming to teach up-to-date knowledge, practice and techniques.
At London Zoo, we’re working to upskill and empower the teachers of tomorrow. Through working with teacher training providers, we’re giving them the confidence to take pupils outside of the classroom and teach in an informal environment.
We also cover sustainability within an education setting and offer advice on understanding the government’s Sustainability and Climate Change Education strategy.
The training includes using current scientific research to explain the benefits of learning outside the classroom, workshops on the integration of informal learning into existing curricula and demonstrations of some of the techniques that ZSL uses to make nature-based learning engaging and meaningful. On-site participants will also get the opportunity to explore our beautiful site and the animals that live here to become comfortable bringing groups of pupils.
Workshops are designed to your needs and are flexible so can either be onsite at either London or Whipsnade Zoo or online.

We have launched a new online teacher training course aiming to support you with the skills and confidence to deliver nature-connected learning, indoors and outdoors, with ZSL conservation expertise and practical teaching resources.
The four-week course will explore the foundations of outdoor learning, including the benefits for pupil engagement, wellbeing and nature connectedness. It also covers biodiversity basics, school grounds activities and curriculum connections through real-world conservation case studies and provides downloadable resources and practical activities.
