What is a 'duiker'?

Duiker are a small to medium sized species of antelope which are found in various locations around sub-Saharan Africa. There are 22 different species in total ranging from the tiny blue duiker weighing in at 4kg to the largest yellow-backed duiker weighing in at 80kg.

The word duiker derives from the word 'diver' due to their speedy reaction to potential predators, which can be likened to diving into bushes or shrubs. Duiker have amazing adaptations like their ability to jump and run incredibly fast for their size. They are also important for the ecosystems where they live in the wild, this is due to the duiker being a keen consumer of fruits and seeds which means they re-distribute seeds in the areas that they live.

The duiker are masters of disguise all with their own unique camouflage to help them hide from predators which are humans, leopards and eagles. Their lifespan is usually around 10 years old in the wild but they can live longer in a zoo environment.

Meet 'Lady' Duiker!

Lady is London Zoo's Red Forest Duiker and can be found in the okapi habitat in Into Africa. Lady is often mistaken for a baby okapi, but she is a fully grown adult weighing in at 12kg! She enjoys living alongside her larger room mates, often found following them around hoovering up any tasty treats that they have dropped. Look out for her on your next visit!

Duiker enrichment

Watch a duiker enjoy an enrichment activity, where a Keeper has hidden and placed food all over the branches for London Zoo's duiker Lady to forage for them and enjoy her lunch in a stimulating way.
