Capybaras have become viral sensations around the world, loved for their chilled out nature, gentle temperament, and adorable appearance.
A result of their ‘internet-fame’, a demand for capybaras as pets is growing. We're working to educate our visitors on why the giant rodents don’t make good pets, and how we can all help to discourage poor animal practises.
Here's a roundup of our favourite, responsible, things you can do to celebrate your love for these iconic animals, both at London Zoo and on our online platforms:
Adopt capybaras
We've just launched a brand new capybara adoption gift pack available in our Zoo shops and also in our online shop, and it's the perfect present! The certificate can be personalised, guaranteed to make a loved one very capy, and each pack also includes:
- An adorable capybara soft toy.
- A capybara pin badge - exclusive to ZSL.
- An exclusive animal adopter pin badge, which can't be purchased elsewhere online or in our Zoo stores!
- A vibrant capybara photo fridge magnet.
- A comprehensive, informative booklet with fun facts to learn everything there is to know about the furry favourites.
Our adoptions are extremely popular as they're a really meaningful gift that not only helps us to care for animals at the Zoo, but also directly supports our vital conservation work, so it's the ideal way to celebrate your love for capybaras and wildlife in general.
Buy a capy keepsake
While you're discovering our adoption gift packs, make sure you take a look at all of our animal merchandise. We've got gifts for capybara lovers of all ages to suit all budgets in our Zoo shop and online, including books, soft toys, cards and mugs. And don't forget to treat yourself too!
Buying a capybara-themed present is a fun and thoughtful way to celebrate someone's love for these charming creatures. And you're also helping us save wildlife around the world with every purchase.

Visit capybaras at London Zoo
If you're a capybara enthusiast, you're in for a treat at London Zoo! You can see them just metres away as we're home to an incredibly chilled capybara duo, Gizmo and Kiwi. The siblings are charismatic, friendly animals, who love a belly scratch, and they've been a huge hit with visitors.
After settling in so well with us, they’ll be staying at London Zoo permanently. We’ve created a brand new spa-inspired pad for them next to ZooTown, complete with two pools, mud-bath wallows and climate-controlled zones.
Did you know, capybaras are a semi-aquatic species, and they're the world's biggest rodents? Learn all about our brother-sister duo, see some of their baby photos, and swat up on your capybara knowledge ahead of your visit.
Become a member to visit them as much as you want to, with unlimited visits for a year!
Upgrade to a Meet the Capybara experience
